You Had Me At Merlot

Updated: May 26, 2023

Summer is around the corner, which means sunshine, bathing suits, and sitting by the water. There will be cookouts and parties. The weather will be warm, and relaxing with a cold cocktail is the perfect way to unwind. You've been sweating in the gym four days a week preparing for that bathing suit. Don't let all that hard work go to waste in the first couple of weeks of the summer with just a few drinks.

I'm not here to tell you that you need to cut it out completely but understand that part of the reason you aren't seeing results with your workouts could be coming from the liquid calories you are intaking.

I know there are perfect scenarios. It's a holiday weekend. You're hanging out with the family. You get to put your feet up and enjoy an adult beverage. The weather is perfect. You're enjoying some sun by the pool, and the cocktail in your hand is the added cherry on top.

I get it. I do, but I don't want to see all your hard work go to waste. While you're kicked back with those feet up, take a look at these few tips to make sure you aren't wasting your calories away with just one drink.

#1 Keep Track of Your Calories

Be mindful of how many calories are in your drink. Vodka has an average of 100 calories per shot. Your average beer is 153 calories per can. Cocktails mixed with soda or juice tend to have more sugar which leads to additional calories. Also, keep in mind most alcoholic beverages have little to no nutritional value.

#2 Limit Your Servings

Make sure you are aware of how many drinks you are having. As you are keeping track of your calories you realize how fast those totals start adding up. Limit yourself to just a couple of drinks per outing.

#3 Drink During Meals

Chose to drink your alcohol during your meals. Have a drink or two with lunch or dinner. This will keep you from "over drinking" and overeating. Consuming both simultaneously will make your stomach full faster. But, be cautious of exactly what you are eating while you are drinking. Alcohol increases the body's cravings for carbs.

#4 Chose Wisely

Red wine for the win. As you've probably heard for years, if you're going to drink one of your best options is red wine. Red wine is low in calories, carbs, and sugar content. It is also a great drink to pair with your meals. If you are not a red wine drinker, other great options would be sangria or tequila with lime.

You've worked hard to wear that two-piece. You deserve to show it off, so continue to be diligent with your health and make conscious decisions. Make this summer your best summer.
